NATIONAL DAY OF COMMEMORATION – GALWAY CITY CEREMONY
The National Day of Commemoration Local Ceremony for Galway City, honouring all those Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions, was held on Sunday July 12th 2020 at City Hall at 11.00am.
To adhere to COVID-19 restrictions, the Ceremony was scaled back considerably and will differ considerably from arrangements in previous years. Due to current public health advice, strict social distancing protocols were in place. Strict social distancing guidelines was observed at all times during and after the Ceremony.
The Ceremony was attended by members of the Defence Forces and religious leaders, Bishop Brendan Kelly and Reveren Helen Freeburn
The Ceremony included an invitation to remember all those who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations. This was be followed by multi-faith prayers of commemoration.
Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr. Mike Cubbard, laid a wreath to honour those who died in past wars or on service, at home or abroad. This was followed by a minute’s silence.
Similar Ceremonies took place nationwide in Dublin, Limerick, Kilkenny, Cork, Sligo and Waterford.
