  • .Successful ?Aviators of the Future? are Recognised at home!. .The Galway Education Centre  honoured 3 teachers and 12 schoolchildren from County Galway who became the first ever international students to participate in the Education programs in the National Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida, USA this summer!  .Leo Enright  presented Kevin McAndrew from St Enda's  with his certificate.   • Cathal Ó Curraoin from An Cheathrú Rua (far left) wins.Western Ireland Regional final of Europe Direct Soapbox Competition ..Third year student Cathal Ó Curraoin from An Cheathrú Rua, Co. na Gaillimhe was crowned West of Ireland Champion at the Regional Final of the 2012 Europe Direct Soapbox Competition at Westside Library in Galway by Jim Higgins MEP...In the face of stiff competition, with 10 others competing for the title, Cathal who studies at ,Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin spoke convincingly and with lots of personality on the motion ?Youth is Wasted on the Young? . Cathal was awarded the title of winner, an ipad and a trip to Brussels for two by a panel of experts in the field of age campaigning and awareness and Jim Higgins MEP  (Front Centre)was in attendance to make the presentation and wished Cathal well as he goes forward to represent the west of Ireland in Farmleigh House, Dublin on November 20th at the National Finals. As well as competing for the national title later in the month, Cathal will also be in with a chance of winning a cash prize of ?1,000 !..Second place on the night was won by college student  Christina nic Dhonnacha from  An Trá Bháin, ,Leitir Móir, Co na Gaillimhe who won 200 euro. Third place was awarded to John Moran from Abbey Court, in Ennis,Co Clare and John won 100 euro...The Western Region heat was open to speakers of all ages from Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Clare and entrants were given 3 minutes each on the soapbox at last night's event. The competition is run by Europe Direct  - an initiative launched in 2005 by the European Commission in partnership with the Library Council of Ireland to create a network of accessible, local information centres around Ireland. There are currently 8 Europe Direct Information Centres nationwide and the Galway centres are based in Carraroe and Ballinasloe. .
