Joe Donoghue, the owner and manager of Donoghues of Galway, and Allen Moran HSE group putting stickers on the bus
This is the message and purpose of the NASA Bus Safety Initiative, which was launched in County Galway last Friday, the 8th of September in Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, Claregalway.
Underage drinking, both before, and on the way to, junior discos and events, has become an increasing problem for parents, for bus operators, for An Garda Síochána and other public bodies such as our paramedic, ambulance and hospital services.
On many occasions in recent years, we have seen undesirable outcomes and scenarios when young people have placed themselves and others at personal risk due to alcohol consumption.
To try to alleviate this problem, and in response to the growing concern amongst professionals, parents and even young people themselves, the NASA (No Alcoholic Substances Allowed) Bus Safety Initiative has been developed. Its aim is to highlight and promote young people’s safety when using private hire buses for travelling to and from events.
The NASA Bus Safety Initiative has been developed by an inter-agency group consisting of representatives from the HSE, An Garda Síochána, the WRDATF (Western Region Drugs Alcohol Taskforce) and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) Photo:Andrew Downes, xposure
