A group of Irish charity supporters were literally on top of the world when they stepped out to take part in Africa's best known road race, at the weekend.

One of the tallest capital in the world, at an altitude of more than 7,700 ft above sea level, the thin air and 30 degrees plus temperatures of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, made for a stern sporting test, but it was one that the 20 strong party of Gorta-Self Help Africa volunteers all finished successfully.

The Irish group joined participants from over 30 countries in a field of nearly 40,000 runners, as they both ran and raised funds to support the Irish charity's development projects in the country.

During a week-long trip the group will also visit farming projects and communities being supported by Gorta-Self Help Africa in the country. . Photo:Andrew Downes.

 • 22/11/2015 repro fee. A group of irish people travelled with Gorta-Self Help Africa travelled to the capital of Ethiopia Addis Ababa for the great Ethiopian run. In temperatures in the mid 30 degree heat and 40,000 people and a city at 7,500 feet above sea level, it’s no mean feat. Photo:Andrew Downes.
